Research Technologist

I am a Research Technologist at the Institute on Terrestrial Ecosystems (IRET) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). With a background in Natural Sciences specializing in Botany and Ecology, I completed a Ph.D. in Landscape Ecology with a focus on urban environment and plants interactions. My research is centred on urban forests and ecosystem services, specifically examining how trees mitigate air pollution. I am also part of the coordination group of the NbS Italy Hub, where I contribute to the creation of a national network of stakeholders interested in NBS. Currently, my role also involves advancing FAIR data practices within the ITINERIS project, where I support environmental Research Infrastructures in implementing standards for data collection, management, and storage to enhance accessibility and reusability.

Meet the professional

I am currently working on multiple topics . My research activity related to NBS is about the identification of mechanisms that enhance the adsorption of particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) by leaves. Specifically, I analyse the quality and quantity of PM on trees and shrubs’ leaves, and their relationships with macro and micro structures. Leaves have a large diversity in morphologies, but some patterns and recurrent structures can be identified; I focus on the identification of those structures and their capability in PM trapping. To conduct my research, I adopt different approaches: laboratory, field analysis and model approach. The technique I use the most is the scanning electron microscopy, coupled with elemental detection through X-ray (SEM/EDX). Overall, my work on NBS spans two main areas: coordination and research exchange. As part of the NbS Italy Hub’s coordination group, I contribute to building a national network to integrate NBS into future territorial infrastructures.

Advice to take away

I would suggest starting with a solid scientific foundation and being prepared to move around Europe, and possibly other countries or continents if necessary.
