FEMLEAD: Fostering FeMale participation and LEADership in open science initiatives
Description
FEMLEAD (Fostering FeMale participation and LEADership in open science initiatives) is an Erasmus+ KA220 Higher Education partnership (2024-1-FR01-KA220-HED-000244364), running 01/11/2024–31/10/2027 and coordinated by Université de Montpellier (FR).
FEMLEAD introduces a new model for HEIs to reduce the gender gap in STEM, using a multi-stakeholder approach to advance Open Science practices and STEM initiatives, and promoting gender diversity, inclusivity and systematisation. It delivers a Virtual Learning Lab on inclusive gender methodologies in R&I; Open Science Fairs and Info Days showcasing female achievement in STEM; and Gender Policy Recommendations with Gender Equality Implementation Plans for HEIs.
Co-funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). Neither the European Union nor EACEA can be held responsible for them. Project No. 2024-1-FR01-KA220-HED-000244364.

FEMLEAD examines how the STEM gender gap is reproduced within institutional research cultures, and how Open Science can act as a corrective mechanism. Open data, open peer review, citizen science and collaborative authorship create entry points for under-represented groups, but only where inclusive gender methodologies are deliberately designed into the research process.
A comparative analysis across France, Croatia, Ireland, Romania and Cyprus informed the FEMLEAD Methodology, which applies inclusive gender approaches across the research cycle — design, team composition, data practice, dissemination and evaluation.
Research outputs: the FEMLEAD Methodology underpinning the Virtual Learning Lab; Gender Policy Recommendations and a Framework for STEM & Open Science implementation in HEIs; and Gender Equality Implementation Plans, aligned with ERA and Horizon Europe GEP requirements. Reports are published in open access at www.femlead.eu.
Papers
FEMLEAD's main resource is the Virtual Learning Lab (VLL) — an online environment training educators, supervisors, researchers and students in inclusive gender methodologies for STEM and Open Science. Modules combine conceptual input with applied tasks, covering gender bias in classrooms, laboratories and research teams; the sex/gender dimension in research content; Open Science as an inclusion mechanism; and mentoring for female STEM students. Guest access instructions are on the project Results page.
FEMLEAD also runs Open Science Fairs and Info Days, a replicable format in which female researchers and students present their STEM work — adaptable for science weeks and outreach events.
Materials are available in English, French, Croatian, Romanian and Greek. Although designed for higher education, the modules and event formats transfer directly to upper-secondary STEM teaching.
