EcoStories: Bridging Borders through Citizen Science for Inclusive STEM and Environmental Action
Description
EcoStories empowers secondary school educators and students through inclusive, STEM-based Citizen Science. Co-created by European teachers and scientific experts, EcoStories offers a Customized Citizen Science Repository featuring 4 thematic modules, 15 ready-to-use lesson plans in Life Sciences, Design & Tech, and Environmental Science, and a rich suite of Digital Learning Nuggets(videos, interactive tools, and case studies). By engaging both local and migrant students in investigating real-world issues—from microplastics and soil health to weather tech and food waste—EcoStories bridges classroom learning with real-world climate action and STEM career awareness.

EcoStories focuses on research and methodology development at the intersection of Citizen Science, inclusive STEM pedagogy, and climate literacy in secondary education. The project gathers qualitative and quantitative feedback from educators, experts, and students through focus groups, Science Cafes, webinars, and Info Days across Europe.
Key Research Frameworks & Deliverables:
- Pedagogical E-book on Citizen Science for Inclusive STEM Education and Climate Action: Examines the pedagogical impact of participatory science in secondary classrooms, offering frameworks for integrating diverse and migrant student populations into STEM.
- 4 Thematic Learning Modules: A research-backed pedagogical architecture for formal and non-formal STEM learning environments that supports Citizen Science implementation.
- Methodological Guide for Young Citizen Scientists: Operational protocols and ethical guidelines for implementing student-led environmental research projects.
- EcoStories Audiovisual Report: Documented case studies, qualitative evaluation, best practices, and direct testimonials from classroom implementation across European schools.
Papers
The EcoStories project provides secondary school teachers with free, open-access, and curriculum-aligned resources designed to bring hands-on Citizen Science and climate action into inclusive classrooms serving both local and migrant students.
- 15 STEM-Based Citizen Science Lesson Plans
Co-created by Citizen Science experts and European secondary school STEM teachers, these 15 lesson plans guide students through real-world investigations across three main subject tracks:
- Life Sciences / Biology: Water pollution, wildlife monitoring, and threatened species.
- Design & Technology: Weather data analysis, mobile observation applications, and digital environmental portals.
- Environmental Science: Atmospheric data collection, food waste prevention, and coastal and soil systems.
- EcoStories Citizen Science Repository
A centralized digital platform structured around 4 thematic modules providing pedagogical content, practical guidance, and flexible learning materials for both formal and non-formal secondary learning environments.
- Digital Learning Nuggets
Directly linked to the repository’s modules, these curated multimedia resources—including short videos, interactive tools, and case-based learning materials—help students actively engage with, apply, and analyze Citizen Science concepts in real-world contexts.
