CLARITY, from Climate Anxiety to Resilience, Connection, Creativity and Regeneration
Description
CLARITY is a European project that reimagines climate education by helping children and youth move from climate anxiety to resilience, connection, creativity and regeneration. Bringing together insights from psychology, pedagogy, arts and sustainability science, CLARITY places emotional competence, imagination, values and collective agency at the heart of learning. The project offers a practical toolbox of ready-to-use activities that support educators in creating caring, future-oriented and transformative learning environments, and complementary resources.
In Europe, climate education tends to focus on teaching complex scientific facts that pose existential threats, without adequate consideration for the learners’ emotional capacities. At the same time, the inner competences needed for collective action to address today’s polycrisis lack attention. This situation contributes to rising levels of stress and anxiety in children, youth, and teachers, with devastating societal impacts. A radical shift in primary, secondary and higher education, as well as in teacher and educator training, is urgently needed to foster planetary health and well-being.

Literature Review – Transformative Climate Resilience Education for Children and Youth( https://transforming-climate.education/document/literature-review/)
This comprehensive literature review explores the vital role of transformative education in addressing climate anxiety and fostering resilience, creativity, and regeneration among children and youth. Conducted as part of the ERASMUS+ CLARITY project, it critically examines existing sustainability frameworks, pedagogical tools, and competency models, offering actionable insights for educators and policymakers.
The report emphasizes the importance of moving beyond traditional climate education, which often neglects the emotional and mental health impacts of climate change. It highlights innovative strategies that link inner development with systemic transformation, equipping educators to support learners in navigating the climate crisis with hope, agency, and collaborative action.
Covering a wide range of themes, from trauma-informed education and socio-emotional learning to the integration of indigenous knowledge systems, this review serves as a foundational resource for developing effective climate resilience education. By addressing both the root causes of climate challenges and their emotional impacts, the document provides a pathway for empowering young learners to imagine and enact sustainable futures.
Competence Framework – Adapted from the EU GreenComp framework, now including the competences children and youth need for coping with climate emotions and the effects of climate change.Competence Framework for Transformative Climate Resilience Education ( https://transforming-climate.education/portfolio-item/competency-framework-english/)
The CLARITY Competence Framework provides a transformative approach to equipping educators with the tools, skills, and strategies to foster climate resilience, creativity, and regeneration in children and youth. This framework adapts the European Sustainability Competence Framework (GreenComp) to address the unique challenges of climate change, emphasizing the development of emotional, cognitive, and actionable competencies to create sustainable and transformative education practices.
Designed to help educators navigate climate anxiety and empower learners, the framework introduces innovative pedagogical approaches. It highlights the importance of nurturing connections to self, others, and nature, embracing diverse and regenerative futures, and developing resilience in the face of climate impacts. Through clear guidance and practical tools, this resource supports long-term individual, collective, and planetary well-being.
Policy Brief: From Climate Anxiety to Climate Resilience and Regeneration in Education (https://transforming-climate.education/document/policy-brief/)
This Policy Brief highlights the critical need for a transformative approach to climate education that not only informs but also empowers learners and educators to address the challenges posed by the climate crisis. Current climate education often overwhelms us with complex scientific facts while neglecting emotional resilience and actionable solutions. This has left many young people feelinganxious, disempowered, and unprepared to tackle both the immediate and long-term impacts of climate change.
The brief emphasizes the importance of fostering inner development, collective resilience, and societal transformation through innovative pedagogical approaches. It calls for systemic change in how climate resilience is integrated into primary, secondary, and higher education, as well as in teacher training. By prioritizing educators’ well-being and equipping them with the necessary tools and support systems, we can ensure a healthier, more engaged, and proactive response to the climate crisis.
