GreenTeach - Trasforming Teaching for a Greener Planet
Description
GreenTeach is an Erasmus+ project (Code 2024-1-BG01-KA220-VET-000246431) that promotes sustainability in the vocational education and training (VET) sector by strengthening the green competences of educators and supporting the design of inclusive, future-oriented learning environments. The project focuses on bridging the green skills gap by equipping VET teachers and trainers with tools, methodologies, and digital resources that integrate environmental sustainability, modern pedagogies, and key transversal competences — including elements of STEM, where relevant to the green transition.
GreenTeach aims to:
- Assess the current state of green education in VET institutions and identify the training needs of educators.
- Develop a competence framework for green VET education, aligned with European standards.
- Design learning outcomes, training curricula, and Open Educational Resources (OER) to fill identified gaps.
- Create an e-learning platform to deliver the “GreenTeach” course in an accessible and innovative format.
- Pilot the course with educators and collect best practices to inform future improvements.
- Launch an online catalogue of green-focused training opportunities for lifelong learning.
- Encourage cross-sector and international cooperation for knowledge sharing and long-term impact.
GreenTeach promotes a holistic and inclusive vision of green education, integrating sustainability into vocational education and training (VET) through digital tools, active teaching methods, and STEM-based approaches, which could support a resilient and environmentally responsible future.

The GreenTeach project (2024–2026) addresses the urgent need to integrate sustainability into both STEM and Vocational Education and Training (VET) across Bulgaria, Italy, Romania, and Turkey, in response to the green and digital transitions reshaping labour markets.
Through a combination of transnational research, stakeholder engagement, and teacher surveys, the project identified significant gaps in educators' knowledge of sustainability frameworks (e.g., GreenComp), limited use of innovative pedagogies, and a widespread lack of professional development opportunities. To tackle these challenges, GreenTeach adopts a whole-institutional approach focused on greening curricula, empowering teachers through digital and experiential methodologies, and fostering collaboration with industry and policymakers.
Key outputs include a validated green competency framework, a teacher training curriculum, an e-learning platform, and policy recommendations.
By embedding sustainability across technical and scientific disciplines, GreenTeach provides a scalable model for systemic educational transformation, positioning STEM and VET educators as key agents in preparing learners for a greener, more sustainable future.
Papers
The GreenTeach project offers a comprehensive set of activities and teaching materials specifically designed to support VET and STEM educators in integrating sustainability into their teaching practice. Grounded in the European GreenComp framework and aligned with national and regional green policies, the project provides both theoretical and practical resources to strengthen green competencies among teachers and students.
Key Activities:
- Teacher Training Program: A structured, modular curriculum covering sustainability fundamentals, green skills integration, and innovative teaching strategies such as inquiry-based learning, experiential learning, and project-based learning. The training is offered in multiple formats, including online, blended, and in-person workshops, to meet diverse teacher preferences and needs.
- E-learning Platform: A dedicated digital environment where teachers can access interactive learning materials, complete training modules, and collaborate with peers across Europe. The platform includes self-paced courses, multimedia content, and practical teaching guides.
- GreenTeach Curriculum and Toolkit: A ready-to-use curriculum framework that helps educators incorporate sustainability topics into various VET subjects, particularly within STEM-related fields. It includes lesson plans, assessment tools, classroom activities, and real-world case studies.
- Catalogue of Green Learning Resources: A curated selection of online resources, including simulations, videos, best practice examples, and digital tools for teaching environmental protection, energy efficiency, circular economy, and climate change.
- Collaborative Challenges and Projects: Teachers are encouraged to engage students in interdisciplinary learning activities, such as eco-projects, green innovation challenges, and problem-solving tasks focused on real environmental issues, in collaboration with local communities or industry partners.
These resources are designed not only to boost teachers’ confidence and competence in teaching sustainability but also to foster student engagement and critical thinking in line with the green and digital transition. GreenTeach empowers educators to be change agents in shaping a more sustainable and resilient future through high-quality, relevant, and practical teaching approaches.
