SENSE. The New European Roadmap to STEAM Education
SENSE. The New European Roadmap to STEAM Education will take the shape of a roadmap to creative and holistic STEAM learning to support tomorrow’s learners and educators – be it in a school, in a museum, the woods or on a construction site.
Description
SENSE. advocates for the development of a high-quality future-making education that is equally accessible to all learners and promotes socially conscious and scientifically literate citizens and professionals. SENSE. aims at radically reshaping science education for a future-making society.By promoting the integration of all human senses into exploring and making sense of the world around us we will challenge conventional ideas of science and science education. With ‘SENSE.STEAM’ future science learning will be moving away from the standardised classroom shapes and furniture layout entering new learning landscapes.

We propose that the renewal of science teaching can be achieved by consequently integrating the Arts into STEM. Building on extensive background research conducted by lead members of the project team, the SENSE.STEAM methodology, comprising a dedicated educational model and its pedagogy (short: SENSE.STEAM) will deliver a change-making approach to both STEM and current STEAM education in a radically new fashion. Based on the current state of the art, SENSE.STEAM is grounded into four building blocks: Reflective feedback, STEAM inquiry, citizen science and art practicies, learner centredness. In addition, SENSE. mainstreams a highly innovative issue into its unique approach: spatial design. We understand “Space” as a multisensory environment that impacts human behaviour in a variety of forms. While there have been attempts in recent times to move away from the “teacher-centred box”, by changing classroom shapes and furniture layout, formal education environments tend to reinforce standardised spatial typologies, promoting formalised exchanges of knowledge and reinforcing existing cultural expectations or stereotypes that may lead to the exclusion of some groups. As SENSE.STEAM aims to put students’ multisensory exploration and creative practice at its core, it is necessary to challenge conventional ideas of educational space towards a model that supports rather than reducing sensory diversity.

Based on the current state of the art, SENSE.STEAM is grounded into four building blocks: Reflective feedback, STEAM inquiry, citizen science and art practicies, learner centredness. The SENSE. Roadmap will be the main result of this project.
The Roadmap will build on a proven methodology - SENSE.
STEAM - designed to introduce a paradigm shift in STEAM education, by stimulating learners’ self-directed and co-operative learning supported by a range of digital tools and to empower all users to design their own STEAM curricula. Therefore, the Roadmap will consist of a learning companion, which supports the adoption of SENSE.STEAM through a freely configurable, modular structure, whereby curriculum content plays on the bandwidth of the senses. Consistent with SENSE. STEAM’s pedagogical approach, the learning companion will be produced as a multi-media output incorporating textual, visual, and audio materials. The STEAM Academy will serve as the engine supporting the adoption of the Roadmap into national European curricula. Via its dedicated digital platform, the STEAM Academy will function as a true hybrid collective for multi-stakeholders' collaboration and communication, at the same time stimulating knowledge (Academy) and experience sharing (Laboratory) within the network of connected stakeholders. The project will host two pilot, real life applications of the Roadmap to demonstrate and test its applicability, and for further adaptation to specific contexts.
