Sustainability Education in Action: Pilots and Teacher Insights from the BUSTIC EDU Project

Over 270 teachers across 6 countries are already putting sustainability education into practice. Here's how the BUSTIC EDU project is turning the GreenComp Framework into real classroom tools, and what comes next.

The BUSTIC EDU project has developed a comprehensive Environmental Sustainability Education Programme to help teachers across Europe integrate sustainability competences into their classrooms. Grounded in the GreenComp Framework, the Programme was piloted with more than 270 teachers from over 40 schools across six countries, each adapting it to their own educational context. As the assessment phase gets underway, teacher feedback will shape the next iteration of the Programme. All resources are already available on the Scientix platform.

 

As sustainability moves to the centre of European education policy, the need for practical, classroom-ready tools has never been greater. The BUSTIC EDU project responded to this need by developing a comprehensive Environmental Sustainability Education Programme: a structured framework designed to help teachers integrate sustainability competences into early childhood, primary, and secondary education.

 

Grounded in the GreenComp Framework, the Environmental Sustainability Education Programme translates sustainability principles into concrete pedagogical guidance through thematic modules, methodological guidelines, and ready-to-use teaching materials. It is built around five key approaches: integrated and competency-based teaching, the whole school approach, reconcilism (fostering the human–nature reconnection) and capacity building for educators.

Trainings were organised in 6 countries to show educators how to bring the Program to life in diverse national and classroom contexts. More than 270 teachers from over 40 schools engaged with the materials, involved in hands-on sessions on translating sustainability principles into practical pedagogical examples and how the piloting phase will progress.  Each country adapted the implementation to its own educational culture and level of familiarity with sustainability education, demonstrating the Programme's flexibility across very different settings.

 

With the piloting phase being almost done, the Program is now in an ongoing assessment phase, collecting feedback directly from participating teachers. This input will be used to refine and strengthen the Environmental Sustainability Education Programme, ensuring it remains responsive to real classroom needs.
