The Framework for Strengthening Blue Education by BlueLightS is now on Scientix®!
Europe's oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes are under pressure, and education has an important role to play in reversing this trend.
“The Framework for Strengthening Blue Education”, developed by the EU-funded BlueLightS project, is now available in the Scientix® resources repository, offering a concrete roadmap for schools, policymakers, and civil society to make that happen.
The Framework aims to strengthen blue education across Europe by increasing the number of schools engaging with blue challenges, supporting inclusiveness for all learners regardless of their location or background, and embedding the blue education vision into national education systems through co-design and experimentation.
To get there, it asks two fundamental questions: What needs to change? and Who needs to be mobilised? It examines five key areas: national strategies, teacher professional development, curriculum, educational resources, and funding. It also identifies the actors whose engagement is essential, from classroom teachers and school leaders to policymakers and civil society. For each area, a maturity model helps schools and institutions assess where they currently stand and plan realistic next steps. A self-assessment tool is also included to support this process in practice.
Drawing on real examples from nine experimentation countries (Croatia, Finland, Spain, France, Greece, Romania, Ireland, Portugal, and Sweden), the Framework closes with a clear call to action: teachers are invited to bring blue education objectives into their classrooms, NGOs and industry to get involved locally and across borders, policymakers to help adapt the Framework to national curricula, and researchers to keep expanding the evidence base. The message is simple: it is time to act!
