The NBS Academy Policy Brief Discusses How to Plant the Seed of Nature-based Solutions in Teacher Training

Introducing Nature-based Solutions (NBS) in STEM education helps contextualise Science education by connecting STEM education with real life problems and the world around us. With NBS as a topic or as background in lessons, students engage in solving pressing societal and environmental problems and develop green competences, as outlined in the EC’s European Sustainability Competence Framework (GreenComp). This in turn equips them to adopt sustainable practices and understand the complexity and interconnectedness of the natural world and our interactions with it.

In this first policy brief, the project presents an initial landscape analysis of opportunities and challenges for integrating NBS into teacher education across Europe. Developed as part of the NBS Academy project, and informed by policy roundtables with representatives from the Scientix® Ministries of Education STEM Working Group, the brief provides an overview of the current conditions shaping NBS uptake in Initial Teacher Education and Continuous Professional Development.
