BUSTIC EDU on the Path to Sustainability in Education
Soon after its launch in spring 2025, BUSTIC EDU began to lay the groundwork of its upcoming Sustainability in Education Programme with a focus on introducing sustainability competences through GreenComp in formal education in each of its three streams - early childhood education and care (ECEC), primary and secondary education.
First, the project looked at how and if GreenComp, along with 5 select pedagogies, are represented through sustainability teaching and learning in European curricula and BUSTIC EDU’s 5 pilot countries in particular (Italy, Malta, Serbia, Spain, and Türkiye). An ever-expanding collection of available resources for sustainability education was also reviewed, and with the additional support of surveys and interviews with educators and experts, BUSTIC EDU was then able to identify the potential gaps and needs of the sector in each of its three streams.

Knowing that the implementation of the Programme needs to go hand in hand with assessing sustainability competences in education, BUSTIC EDU then analysed 20 existing assessment tools and mapped them to the four GreenComp competence areas, while also identifying the relevant gaps and challenges in using these tools. The project will later rely on the findings of this initial research when deciding the most suitable assessment methods to include in the Programme.
