With the SEER, major education stakeholders gather to ask one of the big questions of education: how to equip teachers to embrace interdisciplinary teaching and learning?
STE(A)M education is an innovative pedagogy, where Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are integrated with (All) the other subjects in the curriculum to create engaging and contextualised learning experiences for all students.
But for STE(A)M to deliver on its promises, teachers will need to become increasingly proficient at transversal and interdisciplinary teaching. To support educators in formal and non-formal education in building the necessary competences, a practical and user-friendly competence framework is needed.
The STE(A)M Education European Roadmap project (the SEER) hosted a high-level discussion event to explore the academic, policy, and practical requirements to be considered for the creation of a European certification framework for STE(A)M education.
The discussion was intended to inform the final design of the SEER’s concept for a certification framework, a key component of the SEER Roadmap for mainstreaming integrated STEM education in Europe. It sought to ensure that the concept for the certification framework is fit for purpose and reflects the needs of all major education stakeholders, helping pave the way for STE(A)M education in Europe.
Participants who joined this exploratory high-level event represented all major STEM education stakeholders in Europe:
- European Commission, DG Education Youth Sports, and Culture, and DG Research and Innovation
- The European Training Foundation
- Ministries of Education from Spain and Malta
- Teacher training institutions and Academia from Universidad de Burgos and University of Malaga
- STEM Industry representatives from Infineon, SEMI Europe, and WindEurope
- EU project coordinators from Western Norway University of Applied Science and The Lisbon Council
Guided by the SEER’s team and results, guests discussed the purpose and objectives of such a certification framework and how to make it a reality, informed by the analysis of educators’ needs as evidenced by the project’s research.
