The awarded Learning Scenarios stood out for their strong scientific foundation, creativity, and real-world impact. Each one helps students deepen their understanding of climate change — and encourages them to take meaningful action in their communities.

The award is part of the 2025 Scientix STEM Discovery Campaign, an annual initiative that brings together educators and STEM enthusiasts from across Europe and beyond to promote STEM education and careers.

Now is your turn to explore the learning scenarios and get inspired to introduce them in your classroom. Use them immediately or translate and adapt them to fit your needs and start nurturing the next generation of climate leaders right now!

Learning from the Past, Preventing Risks in the Future

By Enrica Maragliano (Italy)

Enrica Maragliano's winning Learning Scenario takes students on an engaging exploration of flood prevention and environmental challenges in Genoa, Italy. Students study historical floods in the Val Polcevera area, including the major flood of 1746, by analysing old rainfall records and weather data.

They get hands-on with experiments to understand how water speed works (thanks to Bernoulli's law!) and how different soils absorb water. Then, they visit a real historical flood site to see how everything connects to their local environment. Students also collect current rainfall data to compare with past records and research how structures like bridges affect water flow and flood risk.

It’s Not Enough to Know; It’s Necessary to Act!

By Bojana Oreb (Croatia)

Bojana Oreb's Learning Scenario is all about getting students to take action! This exciting project helps students understand how heat moves around and how it contributes to global warming. They do fun experiments, analyse data, and even create climate models using real information and Python (a computer language).

The scenario pushes students to think about what individuals, schools, and communities can do to combat climate change. It wraps up with outdoor activities like planting trees and cleaning up local areas. Plus, students create a website to share their findings and raise awareness. It's a fantastic way to learn science, care for the environment, and build digital skills all at once!

Flames and Forests: Tackling Wildfires and Protecting Our Future

By Anita Šimac (Croatia)

Anita Šimac’s Learning Scenario explores the growing challenge of wildfires in Dalmatia, Croatia. Rising temperatures, longer heatwaves, and droughts — all worsened by climate change — increase the risk of fires in the region. Together with strong winds and human factors like land management, this creates a bigger challenge.

In this scenario, students learn all about the important role of forests and how climate change makes fires more likely. But it's not just about learning; they get to actively help! They design and contribute to real-life reforestation efforts, giving them a hands-on way to protect their local environment and make a real difference.

Congratulations to all the winners for inspiring students (and other teachers!) to act for a sustainable society and a green planet!
