This brief represents an essential step in fostering an education system that prepares students not only with knowledge and technical expertise but also with the critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability needed for the challenges of the 21st century.

European Schoolnet recognizes the essential role of STE(A)M teaching and learning in equipping students with future-ready skills and appreciates the policy’s alignment with our ongoing efforts in this domain.

At European Schoolnet, we have long advocated for an integrated approach to STEM education that connects disciplines and emphasizes real-world applications, ensuring that students develop a comprehensive understanding of both scientific and societal challenges.

To further enhance the policy brief’s impact, we propose additional considerations, based on running Scientix®, the community for science education in Europe for 14+ years, and the research and insights from various projects including the current work of the STEM Education European Roadmap (the SEER) project.

These considerations revolve around four pillars:

  • Improving Initial Teacher Education and empowering future STEM educators
  • Enhancing policy support for the implementation of STE(A)M teaching and learning
  • Advancing inclusivity and diversity in STE(A)M
  • The long-term ambition of Integrated teaching and learning
