Meet the winners of the Eco-STEAM Challenge
Within the H2020 network of the Scientix 4 project, three science institutions from Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (CARNET, Center for the Promotion of Science and the University of Mostar) from the SEE region joined forces to organise a competition. Called the SEE (South-East Europe) Eco-STEAM Challenge, it is dedicated to the adaptation and greening of schools in the context of climate change. Teams of mentors and students from a total of 12 schools participated in the competition (four schools from each partner country).
The goal of this competition was to raise awareness of the effects of climate change that have affected South-East Europe in recent years and to become familiarised with the possibilities of mitigating such changes. As preparation for the start of the competition, a regional webinar was organised where participants could learn more about the topic of the project, climate change, the relationship between climate and weather, and further steps and activities that await them in the competition. The webinar was also attended by guest lecturers, experts in the field of climate change: Prof. Dr Vladimir Đurđević, climatologist, and Nikola Vikić-Topić, meteorologist.
During May, teacher-mentors, together with a selected group of students, measured temperature and humidity for a period of three weeks, and recorded weather phenomena in the environment of their school. After the measurements, the teams from all the schools compared the results obtained with the results from previous years and, on that basis, made a proposal on how climate change could be mitigated in their school’s district. All proposals received were evaluated by institutions/project holders and the best proposals in each of the partner countries were selected.
