What teachers can learn from Nature-Based Solutions

Amid the climate crisis our planet is experiencing, Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) have appeared as reliable alternatives to help build resilience and increase biodiversity. To ensure a future where our children can thrive, learning for sustainability and NBS must be integrated into the school curriculum. With this idea in mind, on December 10th, the European Commission hosted the event “Let Nature Be the Solution”, a turning point in European education to showcase what teachers and students can learn from the NBS project.

The hybrid ceremony reunited people around Europe, including students, teachers, researchers, and representatives from the public and private sector to share ideas and best practices on how to incorporate NBS in schools. The event took place as the culmination of the Integrating Nature-Based Solutions in Education NBS pilot project, of the European Commission Directorate-General for Research and Innovation carried out in collaboration with European Schoolnet (EUN). As part of the project, hundreds of teachers and thousands of students learned about the importance of NBS, across the co-creation and testing of learning scenarios, the exploration of careers and chats with experts working in the field of NBS.

If you missed the opportunity to attend the event, the full recording is now available here . You can also access the educational resources presented during the gathering on the project’s page, such as the NBS career profiles and the chats with experts, a series of online chats attended by almost 500 students from 13 countries.

The “Let Nature Be the Solution” ceremony served to put in value all this work. Beyond engaging in meaningful and productive debates about the pivotal role of education in raising awareness about NBS, the event also recognised the winners of the First Teachers Competition “Nature-Based Solutions in Education”. The winning learning scenarios will be available soon on the Scientix repository.
