Dear PRIMAS Community,
we would like to give you a very brief introduction to our project, especially as we regard it to be relevant for our teachers and multipliers. We look forward to discussions in this forum and hope that it will develop to become the basis for our community of IBL-inspired teachers across Europe.
Sincerely,
Your PRIMAS team
*********************************
PRIMAS stands for ‘Promoting inquiry-based learning (IBL) in mathematics and science across Europe’. IBL has the potential to raise students’ intrinsic interest in mathematics and science and it supports the attainment of important competencies like self-directed learning and exploring new knowledge areas or problem-solving skills.
Teachers are the key players in implementing IBL pedagogies in mathematics and science classrooms. This is why PRIMAS predominately aims to supports the teachers. We do so by combining three elements: providing teaching materials along with professional development courses and a continuous support system within ‘communities of IBL-practice’. Each singular element provides benefits for the teachers but it is the combination that probably adds the biggest benefit.
A very close cooperation with the national school authorities, teacher training providers, curriculum designers, etc. ensures that the best possible conditions are provided in every country. Cooperation with parents and students is another dimension in the project´s support structures for teachers.
PRIMAS is funded under the EU´s 7th Framework Programme for Research, within the ‘Science in Society’ strand. The project runs for 4 years (2010-2013) in 12 European countries: Cyprus, Denmark, Germany (coordinating institution: University of Education Freiburg), Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland and UK.

Hi Diana
thank you for a very detailed information on PRIMAS. Are participants in that project also joining these communities of Practice? It would be good to know about their advances!

Dear Dora,
I am not quite sure whether I understand your question correctly - do you mean if they join this online community of practice? So far, teachers are only linked up internationally on individual ties and mainly based in their national communities, in most countries the teacher professional development courses have started in 2012 so everything is quite new. We will direct their attention to the Scientix community though.
Some of our so called multipliers have also been at the Scientix conference, I can link you up with them if you are interested in exchange.
Which country are you from?
All the best,
Diana
