Making sustainability in education curricula happen through GreenComp
About the project
BUSTIC EDU (Building Sustainability Competences in Education) is a 3-year project (March 2025- February 2028), funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union in the field of Policy experimentation. Targeting the popularization of nature-positive education across European curricula at national level, BUSTIC EDU’s objectives are to:
- Design a programme for introducing sustainability competences across European schools (at early childhood, primary, and secondary education levels) in a variety of subjects; assess the programme; pilot the programme in schools in 5 European countries (Italy, Malta, Serbia, Spain, Türkiye), and update the programme based on assessment outcomes.
- Provide teacher training and knowledge / experience exchange opportunities for pilot teachers from 60 schools, and the wider teacher community.
- Create teaching and learning materials to address the needs for bringing sustainability competences to the education sector at the three levels across the programme.
- Encourage the wider uptake of the programme and its outputs across curricula in Europe.
The programme
With its Programme and other key outputs, BUSTIC EDU will support various education stakeholders - policy makers, national, regional and local authorities, schools, School Heads, teachers, and related institutions, in strengthening sustainability competence development and fostering its systematic integration into education and training.
The methodology
BUSTIC EDU will follow a methodology combining the principles of education for environmental sustainability with an application through: 1) the GreenComp sustainability competences framework, and 2) key pedagogy principles that, together, will facilitate the introduction of sustainability competences in the education sector across schools (in the three BUSTIC EDU streams: early childhood education, primary and secondary education).
