Hi! Who knows of a good definitiion of a Community of Practice?

I've seen a lot on CoP (Communities of Practice) in the big-business sector. Apparently Wenger did a lot of work in that area. How about CoP in the educational sector?

I have found a veryu clear presentation by A Galbis, it is in Spanish buy Google works fine. It deals with "RVT una comunidad de practica en educacion superior colombiana" or a Virtual Tutor Net as a communitu of practice in higher education. The link is

http://www.slideshare.net/algalvis50/rvt-una-comunidad-de-practica-en-educacion-superior-colombiana

There are also manuscripts by the same author, you may find them easily with Google

Regards!

And I have also participated in other Communities of Practice. One of them, a very useful one, was a team of colleagues at a large school, who met regularly to exchange teaching ideas, materials, problems, readings, etc.

I am more and more into the communities business thanks to this Spice Community. I found this ppt

http://www.google.com.co/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=ppt%20wenger%20cop&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CB4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.intrallect.com%2Findex.php%2Fintrallect%2Fcontent%2Fdownload%2F821%2F3480%2Ffile%2FBuilding%2520Communities%2520Of%2520Practice.ppt&ei=Q5Y2T8PINIqn8QPviOm6Ag&usg=AFQjCNGk0rCz0WBj0czbr5ZTZN0MLyaErQ

itis a looooong link, but get you directly the presentation about building coomunities of practice.
I believe the ideas serve well for the Spice community.

Oh thanks Albert

It's really useful.
I found this definition in the ppt and I like very much the word passion. I think it is the most important word in the field of education and teaching emoticon

CoP definition
“Groups… who share a concern, or a passion about a topic…who deepen their knowledge and expertise by interacting on an ongoing basis (Wenger et al, 2002 )

I agree, Valeria, that definition fits perfectly to our teachers' community
