STEM FEMALE LEADERS

The STNS “STEM Female Leaders: How successful programmes are reducing the gender gap in STEM fields” was held online on 29 April 2022.
Although girls and boys show similar performances in science and mathematics, and even achieve greater digital literacy scores, women are less present in STEM. Encouraging girls to pursue an education and career in the STEM field is important not only to remedy the lack of supply of graduates in the STEM job market, but also to diversify and enrich perspectives to ensure that researchers, entrepreneurs, and leaders in STEM tackle complex problems of the world from diverse viewpoints.
Twenty participants with experience in the topic joined this Science Topics Networking Seminar (STNS), including the Ministries of Education from Spain, Malta and Italy, representatives from Huawei, Pearson Italy, Elias Robot, NoteBloc as well as the European Centre for Women and Technology (ECWT), FeSTEM, Educonsult and the European Commission DG Education, Youth, Sport and Culture representatives, and teachers with experience in the topic. In this seminar, participants explored the key success factors in existing programmes and interventions to help increase girls’ interest and engagement in STEM.
The main aims of this STNS co-organized by Scientix, GEM and URBANAGE were:
- Exploring the existing interventions and programmes for engaging girls in STEM and their success.
- Reflecting on the lessons learned from the experiences of teachers, researchers, industry partners, ministries of education and other key stakeholders.
- Provide a platform for exchanging knowledge and build a community around the topic of girls in STEM.
- Agree on potential additional actions that could be taken to improve the situation.
The organisers collected ideas, comments and general conclusions agreed between participants during the workshop. The results of the discussion are published in a Scientix Observatory paper co-authored by all participants.
