STEM MOOCs Package

The first STEM MOOCs package of European Schoolnet Academy consists of three unique MOOCs and allows teachers to obtain a special certificate from European Schoolnet Academy on their "Connecting STEM to the world all around us in an Integrated STEM expertise". These courses give teachers the opportunity to bring their learning experience to the next level by mastering the integration of real-world STEM problems in their lessons with the ‘STEM is Everywhere!’ MOOC, and discovering how to develop and implement a STEM integrated lesson plan with the STE(A)M IT MOOCs.

Designed and carried out by Scientix, the community for science education in Europe, the ‘STEM is Everywhere! Rerun’ MOOC will help primary and secondary school teachers, and teacher trainers from Europe and beyond, to identify Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in everyday life and learn how to integrate real-world STEM problems to their lessons and practice.

The ‘Integrated STEM Teaching for Primary Schools’ MOOC is relevant to primary school teachers of all levels of experience who are interested in learning how to go from teaching isolated Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics classes, to a real integrated STEM teaching of these topics, not only among themselves but with all other disciplines. This MOOC will examine the opportunities offered by integrated STEM teaching and will provide many practical examples.

The ‘Integrated STEM Teaching for Secondary Schools’ MOOC aims to provide secondary school teachers with essential skills and knowledge to go from isolated Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics classes, to a real integrated STEM teaching of these topics. And not only among themselves but with all other disciplines. Furthermore, you will be able to explore exemplary STE(A)M integrated lesson plans created and tested by other teachers, and many more relevant resources.

STEM Is Everywhere

Scientix is organising a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in 2018 with the title "STEM Is Everywhere" at the European Schoolnet Academy.

This course is meant to connect Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) classes with “real life” and help teachers integrate real-world problems into their STEM lessons and practices. The lack of connection between real life and STEM classes might cause students to rule out STEM careers, because they feel detached from STEM and might deem it too “academic” or “research-oriented”. Teachers often encounter this issue when they aim to motivate their students or direct them towards STEM careers.

Therefore, the ‘STEM Is Everywhere!’ course offers guidance and practical examples for you to bring real-world problems to your STEM teaching in an entertaining way. The course also aims to connect you with other STEM teachers so that you can share experiences and best practices.

This course is an opportunity for teachers who want, through online lessons and information about career guidance and development. It is also great for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and is completely free of charge!

The course starts on 29 October 2018 and runs for the duration of 5.5 weeks, with a total number of 4 learning modules (one module per week) and an extra grace week at the end of the course for a peer-to-peer activity. The estimated workload is 2-3 hours per week. Total estimated time: approximately 17 hours.

This course is developed and organised by Scientix, the community for science education in Europe, with financial support from the Horizon 2020 framework of the European Union for research and innovation.

Participants will be able to finish this course in a minimum of 4 weeks and a maximum of 9 weeks. We hope that in this way, everyone can personalise their learning schedule, and finish the course in their own time, and pace.

This course was an initiative of the STEM Alliance, in collaboration with SYSTEMIC and Scientix, in order to give teachers and other educators the chance to know members of the STEM Alliance closely. The main audience for this MOOC is primary school teachers and secondary school STEM teachers, while secondary school teachers of any other subjects are also welcome to participate.
