TOPIC 2: RECOMMENDATIONS FOR STEM TEACHERS IN PRIMARY EDUCATION TOPIC 2: RECOMMENDATIONS FOR STEM TEACHERS IN PRIMARY EDUCATION

There is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to STEM education at a primary level. Below you can find a set of recommendations and best practices to discuss about:

  • Continuous professional development for educators focused on solidifying teachers’ competences in both the theory and methodology of STEM subjects paired with a better assessment of teachers.
  • Adaptation of national curriculums in order to put more attention to STEM subjects. Should they be designed in order to dedicate extra hours to STEM subjects? Should they be focused on integrating different STEM subjects as well as STEM and other disciplines?
  • Use of Inquiry Based Education as a teaching tool. It allows to name and start relating to real life processes and, eventually, connect them with conceptual entities that are basic knowledge to pursue higher science education. It can also make subjects more attractive to students from a very beginning, helping unstigmatize them and increasing students’ engagement.
  • Specific support for lower achievers. Science learning is like a pyramid: It is not possible to teach higher level concepts and skills if the basics are not internalized. For that reason, it is recommended to offer special attention to those pupils who have more difficulties from an early time.
  • Regular standardized assessment of pupils’ development to be carried on yearly (or more regularly) than the already existent ones.
