The high level of institutional autonomy in Europe makes it difficult to hold any comparison in the primary education area. Nevertheless, there is one common feature: While a big part of the curriculum is set on reading, writing and counting, very few efforts are put into science and technology education.   

This fact is quite shocking given the amount of benefits an early STEM education provides pupils. Including science teaching from primary education (and even in pre-school!) will have a huge impact in the process of becoming scientifically literate. Early contact with scientific phenomena will help pupils better comprehend the scientific concepts that will be later studied in a formal way as well as to acquire a set of skills that will be further used in secondary and tertiary education. Consequentiallly, students will broad their possibilities in the access to future careers and improve their cultural scientific background.

In fact, pre-school and primary education are the best stages to set up the foundations of a science related education. Because of their innate curiosity, children welcome all types of science activities. Therefore, it is essential to embrace that opportunity to encourage them to learn science. On top of all, attitudes towards science are formed during upper-primary, lower-secondary years. If, during those years, kids grow to think of those subjects as “difficult” and “boring” it will be difficult to engage them afterwards.

I agree the students will become more skilled in using technology and in problem solving. I think they become more responsible and thhey would be able to work in groups too. Which is the best method used in school for increasing ICT skills in primary school in your opinion?

In my opinion, our youngest pupils have the gift for exploration and experimentation already. When those natural impulses are matched with fundamental science concepts and instruction in inquiry methods, pupils gain a solid foundation in science that can help them move ahead and excel in STEM fields in the future.

Some studies show children exposed to STEM educational resources at a very young age perform better in science and math than students who are not.

I was inspired to share experience in my country with you by the question above. Teaching science at primary schools presents a specific set of challenges, including finding curriculum time, the level of priority given to science, the confidence of generalist primary teachers to teach science, and a relative lack of professional development around the subject. I would like to present a new reform in my country (Republic of Macedonia) during the last two years related with STEM education.
The Ministry of education was initiated to start with new reforms in STEM education because of the low results from Pisa results. Collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Science in Macedonia and Cambridge International Examinations resulted with new curricula in math and science for students in all state primary schools. The new curriculum is adapted from the Cambridge Primary curriculum to suit the educational requirements of Macedonia.
This curriculum, benchmarked to international standards, is intended to develop primary school students’ skills in maths and science so they are well prepared for the next stage of their education. It is supported by new textbooks and adapted to local educational requirements. Cambridge International Examinations also provide trainings for primary school teachers in Macedonia to ensure they are well equipped to introduce the new curriculum to their students. Our government underline how important it is, in a global economy, for Macedonian students to be educated to the highest levels so they are able to compete locally, in Europe and internationally for the best jobs in the future. A world-class primary curriculum is an essential foundation if young people are to achieve their full potential.
We, teachers in Macedonia, believe that the new STEM curriculum will bring to our system better education to all the pupils around the country. It is our strongest commitment to improve the quality of education, especially the education in primary schools. The new curricula for maths and science is implemented in all state primary schools for students in Grades 1-3 from September 2014. This year are obtain Grades 4-6 and Grades 7-9 will start in the following year.
I do hope that new reforms in STEM education will increase not only student's STEM skills, but competencies of STEM teachers as well.
So, trough this example, I wanted to express the pleasure that we, as a country are having national benefit in the area of STEM educationemoticon.

In Estonian curriculum scientific and technological literacy is an important outcome of studies at school.
In primary classes the students mainly get to know their surroundings and everyday
phenomena. They develop an interest in nature and the ability to behave properly in
nature. The main investigation-based and practical activities are observing objects (including natural objects), comparing, grouping, measuring, making experiments, making collections and using plans. By the end of this stage of study, the students move from describing natural phenomena towards making simpler connections and drawing conclusions. The primary stage is very important because it gives the basis for going further to more complicated tasks.

I think that STEM education should began with preschoolers. Through game, in class or nature, children find out why is important that a bee lands on flower or to learn to make toys from recycling material. Curiosity awakened in that way, which further develops creative teacher, motivates pupils to explore on their own, to be a part of school projects and outside classes activities. Ultimate benefit is that the most of that students their life call find out in areas for which is necesserly STEM education.

Benefits of an early STEM education is that the pupils are interested in almost everything, they are curious and open to investigate. It's important that the teachers are educated in STEM. In DK it's mandatory that pupils from 1. grade are taught STEM, but still many of the teachers are not educated in the subject.

As I believe that the base of any kind of education starts at primary school we, as teachers, have the responsibility to act and teach keeping always in mind that we are the first pioneers for the new world into which children will start to discover. Considering this thought I believe that STEM education is really a new world which we owe to lead our students into it.

I've been reading all the reports here referenced and I wonder, elementary education has how many years? In different countries there's differents concepts.
It would be interesting if, in general guidelines, European Community should define a common path. They made it for University graduation!
For elementary level, with 4 year of study, we have a Science program in Portugal, very complete. Then we have annual guidelines from the Educational ministery, with focus on reading and math! Students make exams with 10 years old!
STEM education has many benefits, on first hand, because children learn much easier at these ages. Parents also have a part on this, when they give cientific toys to them. Natural curiosity is very important!
I would like to stress the environmental factor to prepare for bigger experiences!

There's many initiatives to teach STEM, it's very important to learn to think about something with criticism and meaning. That's important for everything in life!
If we want to introduce something, we must think also how children receive our idea, we need to put technology together or better not?
Sometimes everything seems going too fast! And teachers must be well prepared...

It's very interesting the proposal of Macedonia, Natilija. We would like to know more about the results after some years.
In my country, Spain, the changes are always focused in language and maths.
And, I think maybe language and maths need something to speak about. Why not science?

Scence is in the curriculum, of course, but at very elemental level, and as the curriculum in in a spiral shape, our studnets repeat almost the same every year (the cycle of water, for example).

The experimentacion depens of every teacher. Thus, maybe teacher training can be to most important thing to look for new approaches.
