In Scientix, the Community of Science Education in Europe, we aim to promote Europe-wide collaboration among STEM teachers, researchers, policymakers and other education professionals and, among all, we aim to help these stakeholders to further and better STEM education around Europe.  And how can we do it without recognizing the value and potential of girls?

In this Community of Practice, we will share experiences on how to encourage young girls to choose STEM careers (Check out the 6 reasons why science needs girls!) and we will debate and try to understand the reasons behind the lack of women in STEM jobs.

EXPERTS

  Jukka Rahkonen (M.Sc.) is an experienced physics, chemistry and math teacher, lecturer and curriculum designer and consultant. Jukka has been developing science education at a European level for several years. At the moment, he is the Scientix Ambassador for Finland. He has been previously involved in the inGenious project for three years and he also worked as a Finnish Teachers’ Coordinator in the NanOpinion project. For the European Commission, Jukka worked as an expert in the Science it’s a Girl Thing project. He has also been consulting gender equality issues for different projects and moderating European communities of practices dealing with that topic.

Jukka has experience on international teacher training and curriculum consulting and in advising European science education projects. One of Jukka’s practices for innovative teaching was selected to be used in teachers training in Wallonia, Belgium. In Finland Jukka has been working for the Finnish National Board of Education to make the new national physics curriculum, also being responsible for coordinating the implementation of national curricula locally. He has published a guide for STEM teachers about how to differentiate teaching and a story based teaching material Funny Physics Stories

Chiara Tripepi works as a Policy Officer at the European Commission under the DG for Research and Innovation where she collaborates in the Science: It's a girl thing! campaign and follows up of the Helsinki Group on Gender in Research and Innovation. She has previous professional experience as a Communication and Information Officer, at DEEEP as well as on Children Rights with Terre des Hommes International and in Public Law, with the European Law Center. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Political Science, and two Masters Degrees: in International Relations and Human Rights and in Human Rights, Democracy and Rule of Law.

Marina JimĂ©nez Iglesias is the Teachers Panel Coordinator and Project Administrator for Scientix, under the European Schoolnet umbrella. Her work is mainly focused on the coordination and management of the Scientix Ambassadors dissemination activities on STEM education throughout Europe. She has experience in development of European projects in different non-profit organizations. She holds a B.Sc. in Political Sciences and Administration from Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a M.A. in International Relations from the University of Bath. Her main areas of interest are Education, Human Rights and Gender studies.

COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE

The Scientix Communities of Practice (CoP) entail a moderated online forum, leaded by a designated expert, where STEM teachers will be able to discuss on science and technology subjects.

In this space you will find a basic presentation on the topic, paired with a series of useful resources as topic guidelines. Participants will find an array of open questions to inquire and discuss about.

The objective of the CoP is to let the participants engage and discuss with each other on those questions they are more interested in, to end up formulating a series of final ideas or conclusions.
