topic 2: technology in the classroom

The improvement of new technologies has helped IBSE in furthering its scope. We have now, at our disposal, a very wide array of high-tech devises (such as laptops, digital cameras or mobile phones, among others) that can help integrate new innovative activities and lesson plans in the classroom. This revolution is affecting the way in which teachers can perform lesson activities as they can use these new gadgets in laboratory experiments, by developing new hands-on activities, when organizing field trips, etc.

And it is especially when it comes to digital technology, that those changes are more tangible. New advantages such as the flexibility, speed and store capacity of modern computers, as well as the easy access to online resources that provide teachers with a wide variety of interesting research and multimedia tools, is making STEM educators think about the new possibilities of the traditional teaching process. The opportunity to use new technological developments will do nothing but help improve inquiry-based methodologies that can include direct observation of phenomena, consulting information previously non-available; that will, in turn, help them use a wide range of skills that will be very useful for further scientific learning.

And it is also by incorporating new devices, that the traditional classroom surroundings can be used to enhance students’ interactivity and participation by giving the pupils the opportunity to be active participants instead of only passive listeners (A clear example of that, EUN's Future Classroom Lab). As a matter of a fact, teachers today’s classrooms are facing “digital natives” students: pupils that have grown up with technology and often happen to be more skilful with it than the teachers.

OPEN QUESTIONS:

  • Knowing how to use computers is not the same as knowing how to teach with computers. Some studies have proved that teachers are still in need of a portfolio of technology-based resources. Can you give any examples that you have used with your students?
  • Every day, more and more technology gadgets are developed. (Add links) Could you tell us which are your high-tech essentials to use in the classroom?
  • There is also a number of beneficial applications on the use of new technologies. From image processing to simulations, going through interactive processes or communication opportunities over the web. Tell us which of these skills do you think has been the most helpful or resourceful in your STEM lessons?
  • Living in an era were change is a constant, technologies are in a constant development. Which are the main advantages and disadvantages when using new technologies in the classroom?

In my country (Republic of Macedonia) since 2005 the government is running a big project ,,computer for every student”. During all those years, except received computers for all students, all teachers in primary and secondary schools get lap tops for their work, and trainings for ICT use were delivered for all teachers in the country.
During the last nine years, we have lot of advantages into the classroom, trough use of ICT:
• higher quality lessons through greater collaboration between teachers in planning and preparing resources .
• More focused teaching, tailored to students’ strengths and weaknesses, through better analysis of attainment data
• Encouragement of independent and active learning, and self-responsibility for learning.
• Development of higher level learning styles.
• Students trough use of educational technology in school felt more successful in school, were more motivated to learn and have increased self-confidence and self-esteem
• Students found learning in a technology-enhanced setting more stimulating and student-centered than in a traditional classroom
• Broadband technology supports the reliable and uninterrupted downloading of web-hosted educational multimedia resources
• Opportunities to address their work to an external audience
• Opportunities to collaborate on assignments with people outside or inside school.
One of the major barriers for the cause of ICT not reaching its full potential in the foundation stage is teacher’s attitude. Some see it as a potential tool to aid learning whereas others seem to disagree with the use of technology in early year settings. Some teachers still have lack of the ICT skills, some of them lack of the area in the curriculum, and the biggest obstacle is language barrier if they want to enrich the educational content of their subject with use of different digital multimedia resources on internet.

I agree with you Natalija. You are right. I am a teacher of physics and chemistry and almost in every my lesson I usе ICT. Usually I use videos, presentations that I have done previously or Bulgarian or English educational site, videoconferences. I think that I have a lot of advantages into my classroom, trough use of ICT: higher quality lessons, students, who use of educational technology in school felt more successful and are more motivated to learn and have increased self-confidence and self-esteem, the using of technology in the classroom is that excited curiosity in students, students found learning in a ICT setting more stimulating than in a traditional classroom. For teachers this is opportunitie to collaborate and work with people outside or inside school – experts, scientists, university teachers.
In my country, the biggest barriers for the cause of ICT is that we have not qualification courses for science teachers how they can use ICT in the class rooms. A large group of them do not know the possibilities of technology and never used them. Some teachers still have lack of the ICT skills, some of them lack of the area in the curriculum.

I agree that attitude is a one of the main obstacle..Unfortunately, there is always a group that does not want anything to change, that though see flaws in the current system, they do not want to take advantage of modern technology. This group of teachers would probably be happiest such that we use the technology of the Stone Age, we can all recognize those in our schools, universities, ministries ..I call them technophobes.
Technology and technology solutions are only one tool-tool always depends on the hands of the one who uses it. And irresponsible not to use the tools, but when all about you are using.
The main problem is always the same - conceptual change.

A new initiavie by the EUN schoolnet could help, you get a lot of ideas and helping hands in there:

just sign in and figure out,

I agree with Natalia and Svejina. Language is a major barrier to using ICT in schools. Another problem is the lack of interest of young people to study science , especially physics , perhaps because of the salary is very low. Involving young people in science education is chance to change situation. The older generation are well prepared as teachers, but many of them are not interested in using ICT, haven't ICT skills or in Bulgaria can not find ICT courses for science teachers. I learned a lot about the use of ICT in Comenius projects, European training courses, Scientix project and by my students. Now I'm happy to be involved in European Schoolnet Academy courses and to share this information with my colleagues.

I am sorry but ... Unfortunately I am completely opposed to the view of Bosiljko as stated "This group of teachers would probably be happiest such that we use the technology of the Stone Age, we can all recognize those in our schools, universities, ministries .. I call them technophobes". It is certain that every position that has in its basic structure stereotyped expressions such as the word "technophobes" creates communication barriers with others and isolates them. Then in this situation can’t be easily discussed any different opinion and at the end no solution can be given since the communication has been lost.

On the other, after many discussions with my fellow teachers in primary education I definitely realized what the actually problem for those who don’t want to use technology in their teaching. The actually problem of the educators is the loss of control of the educational process. In every pedagogical design, teacher trying to put under their control the educational process, the individual stages and the factors affecting it. With the development of technology, new media and educational introduction to education educators seemed to represent a transfer of power on educational practice. In designing and teaching new techniques and instruments has assumed other specialists, such as education technologists, experts of media, information theorists and experts. At the end, the teachers was faced a major problem. The lost of power which they had in educational practice. Since then, the major question for them is the following: Who controls the process of education. This actually is the problem which explains to a large extent, a return to traditional pedagogical techniques of teaching and the small or limited technology use on it. For these reasons, I believe, has been established by plenty surveys that teachers have unforeseen response to the broad technological boost.

Being aware of my colleague’s problem I am trying to convince them that the technology can be used as a single agent. It depends on themselves, as teachers, how will enable pedagogical principles when design teaching and how would apply to it. In this way they become convinced that once again dominating the educational process and they can have their autonomy during educational process.

Hi,

I am very sympathetic to the points made by Nikolaos. Taking on any new technology in the class requires additional (or a novel) skills set. I suspect that most teachers will have this skills set, while others, even if otherwise being excellent educators, might not.

I try and keep moving to take up technology - especially if it makes my life easier (!) and I adopt as much as I can as I teach. Some things work and some things don't and I think it is really important to be aware that some new approach, may or may not work (even in different classes with different kids).

For me the "elephant in the room" is: a) getting new equipment/technology in the first place, b) getting it to work. In my school we face big financial problems and updating equipment takes lower priority than trying to pay (and keep) staff. Hence, the kit used is dated and unreliable for kids. Then, you are faced with 32-35 difficult kids on a bumpy day and you have to cope with getting the new technology to work (!).

I suspect we all have similar stories, but with me it means that are really limited in their hands on use of new kit - indeed, there are times I try and avoid it.

Hum.......maybe there is a new project there for SCIENTIX: How to get large classes of difficult kids effectively engaged in lessons when things don't work!

Just a few words to add about the difficulties (it seems the "elephants in the room" are pretty much the same emoticon ):
1. I always have a plan B available just in case things don't work, a flexible plan, to be used for a short while just to cover the time while I try to make the ICT alternative work up to a whole-period alternative. I guess we all do that.
2. I sometimes rely on students as "experts" for their peers. For example, last year, I taught Geogebra to a few students in a group, then gave them some assignments to work on that required more self-instruction, than had them demonstrate to the others in what we called "a miniconference" They were delighted to explain the tool to their colleagues.
3. Since using ICT is most of the times very demanding, I make sure I use it only if it really brings added value to a lesson.

Thank you for remind me about the EUN courses. It is very interesting to see some of my colleagues that are very focused on those courses. They are very helpful in this moment for most of them who are eager for more knowledge, increased skills, but also for the relevant certificate provided at the end of the course.
Actually, in my country, the educational inspectors validate teacher's work according known indicators (and the final score of fulfilled indicators has influence on teacher's salary).
One of more important indicator is use of technology, digital content and different application in the classroom, proved by their daily work in the classroom and certificates related with their improved IT skills. As more certificates and trainings based on IT knowledge, higher scores are provided for those teachers and finally, higher salary. Sounds very motivated for those who are not technophobes.
Now, it is very easy to understand the importance of that kind of courses for my colleagues.
Best regards
