Up2U - Up to University

Up2U bridges the gap between secondary education and universities by better integrating formal and informal learning scenarios and adapting both the technology and the methodology that students will most likely encounter at universities.

The key objective of the Up2U project is to bridge the gap between secondary schools on one hand and higher education and research on the other hand by better integrating formal and informal learning scenarios and adapting both the technology and the methodology that students will most likely encounter at universities. In this context, secondary schools provide secondary education to students from the ages of eleven to nineteen, depending on the country. Secondary education takes place after primary education and before higher education.

Up2U is an initiative that meets the objectives of the European Commission, aimed at developing new cloud-based tools and services to enhance primary and secondary education. The project kicked off in January 2017 with financial support from the European Commission of five million euros over the period of 36 months. The project is coordinated by GÉANT in partnership with eighteen organisations in twelve countries across Europe. Those include National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), traditional and open universities, infrastructure providers and two commercial partners.

The main outcome of this project is a single sign-in Next Generation Digital Learning Environment (NGDLE) that allows teachers and students to practise their digital skills in the classroom and beyond. This helps students and their teachers to evaluate their digital skills before the students enter university. The NGDLE platform is available on the project’s website here: https://learn.up2university.eu/

Furthermore, the project’s online learning platform on Moodle supports the development of both formal and informal learning scenarios within and beyond the classroom. These tools support various methodologies and pedagogies, including project-based learning, flipped classrooms, teamwork and more. The Up2U tools can therefore be helpful in various learning scenarios in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
