The vidubiology project aims at improving the teaching of biology and engagement with biology and science through the production of innovative pedagogical materials.

The vidubiology project is funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. The project aims at improving the teaching of biology and engagement with biology and science, targeted at 10 to 14-year-old students at school. This is a critical age, in which students’ interest in their own education can be lost, especially in the fields of mathematics and sciences.

The project is designed to produce innovative pedagogical materials for teachers, as they are the main interface able to bring about change in science education.

The project produces guides for teacher training, handbooks, case studies and videos that are easy to use, thus enabling teachers to replicate and use the project’s outputs in classrooms all over Europe. In addition, the project holds piloting sessions with schools, workshops and multiplier events, across Europe, to help teachers using the project’s outputs.

The vidubiology project offers great ideas on how video and media can support biology learning by providing clear examples of biological themes, suitable for the curriculum of students, and great ways that students can use cameras autonomously and collaboratively to enhance their learning.

There are three key objectives for the vidubiology project. They are:

  1. To address underachievement in science through motivating and engaging pedagogy, using media to enhance learning processes.
  2. To apply visual language to support multilingual classrooms across Europe, a core element of the project’s scope of work. Students have to express their ideas through images only.
  3. To work in a European team that supports national initiatives for science learning.

With more than 20 years of active use of video in the field of education, it is clear that media tools are very popular with young people. However, just getting cameras into students’ hands is only a small part of what vidubiology proposes. Video education has to be embedded in pedagogy. For vidubiology, this means that students are motivated to ask scientific questions, take initiative and work in teams, but also know how to get support to help them to become more critical about their media outcomes.
