COMPASS (Creating Online Materials and Products At STEM Subjects)
The COMPASS (Creating Online Materials and Products At STEM Subjects) project is an initiative that alleviates problems by bridging the gap between research and teaching practices.
The project’s partnership is composed of two research-based universities (Bayreuth, Germany, and Maribor, Slovenia). Both universities have sound experience in developing dynamic geometry software (JSXGraph) and in the innovative use of ICT in classrooms (e-books) to enhance their didactical benefits.
Four secondary schools from four countries (Spain, Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria), ensure that the project is firmly connected with the everyday reality of school life; and a Spanish company in educational technology brings the consortium into contact with the modern entrepreneurial world.
Basic information
The project’s objectives are the following:
- To develop four STEM learning modules on a Moodle platform for secondary school students. These learning modules integrate JSXGraph-based interactive animations in quizzes on Moodle, taking advantage of their in-built learning analytics systems to monitor students’ progress. The didactical approach uses problem-based techniques aiming at developing 21st century skills, such as inquiry, learning to learn and collaboration. Courses are published as OER (Open Educational Resources) under a Creative Commons license and translated into English and the project’s partners' languages.
- To organise at least 10 teacher training activities, involving around 200 teachers, at the national and European level, in order to introduce and discuss COMPASS’s materials. In addition, the project’s server gives free access to the materials to facilitate networking within the STEM teacher community.
- To engage at least 50 teachers in experimenting the materials developed in different classroom contexts, involving around 1000 students. By creating the COMPASS Online Academy, the partners contribute to the mentoring of teachers while they are teaching their students.
