EEOBSS - Education in Earth Observation for Bulgarian Secondary Schools

Share this project

The main goal of the EEOBSS project is to develop and test lecture notes on Earth observation for the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects taught at secondary schools in Bulgaria.

The tasks of the project include a number of educational events (summer school, testing of the Earth observation tool-kit in class) and media events (press releases, publications, participation in conferences), with the aim of reaching a wider audience of policy-makers, educators (teachers), students, etc.

The goal of the EEOBSS workshop (http://workshop.eeobss.space) is to present current trends in Europe and future opportunities for Earth observation education at secondary schools in Bulgaria. Through an open discussion at the end of the Workshop, the EEOBSS participants review recent research advances in Earth observation education and put together a document which is distributed to the main stakeholders in secondary school education. The Workshop objectives are also directed to:

  • fostering new ideas for network collaborations and joint projects/articles by participants;
  • addressing specific issues/needs in Earth observation secondary school education in Bulgaria.

The EEOBSS Summer School trains secondary school students (10th-12th grade) in using modern Earth observation (EO) technology applications. This training shows students basic functions in Earth observation GNSS, GPS and Galileo systems, satellite data acquisition, data pre-processing and image analysis and classification, as well as accuracy assessment. During the last day, students learn about Earth observation applications in the field of climate change and ecosystem research services. All participants are awarded certificates of attendance which can be used as a proof of extracurricular activities when applying for university programmes.

The EEOBSS lecture notes developed as part of the project are tested in class (in the EEOBSS school network) and published online on a Moodle platform and also printed.
