EDU-ARCTIC - Innovative educational programme attracting young people to natural sciences and polar research


EDU-ARCTIC is an EU-funded project focused on using Arctic research as a vehicle to strengthen science education curricula all across Europe. It aims at encouraging students aged 13 to 20 to pursue further education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), setting them on a path to perhaps one day work in one of these sectors.

The EDU-ARCTIC project uses a mix of different tools to bring a fresh approach to teaching STEM subjects, including online webinar lessons with polar scientists (during which students enter a virtual classroom that allows them to experience polar science firsthand), a “citizen science” environmental monitoring programme, teacher training activities and workshops, an online “Polarpedia” portal with loads of useful information, and a chance for students to win a trip to an Arctic research station!

The primary goal of EDU-ARCTIC is to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education among students between the ages of 13 and 20. It aims to do this by providing an innovative and attractive educational programme accessible to schools all across Europe.

The project also aims at establishing strong links between the research and education communities by connecting schools participating in the project to scientists at Arctic research stations and research institutes throughout Europe.

Students participating in the project are given a unique opportunity to get to know what scientific careers are like and learn more about different research disciplines, while learning how to apply the scientific method and learn crucial problem-solving skills.

The project will also:

  • Allow students to better understand the role of scientific research in the modern world, scientific messages and scientific language;
  • Increase their knowledge about nature, geography, natural resources, history, social science, political science;
  • Raise awareness about environmental issues and climate change;
  • Encourage young people to choose STEM careers;
  • Increase the number of girls interested in scientific careers by using methods and language sensitive to gender issues in educational resources and programmes;
  • Introduce innovative teaching tools via an e-learning portal, available in at least 10 European countries;
  • Build the confidence and competences of teachers involved in the project.

A set of reports and deliverables are made available for public audience, e.g.:

  • Report on desk research: The report provides guidance on understanding what qualifies as basic skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), as well as needs of the labour market and scientific environment. In addition, it want to contribute to the understanding of current approaches for methods used to encourage young people to pursue careers in STEM, needs of the labour market in the field of science and STEM professions, relevant policies, strategies, programmes, objectives and recommendations. The report is based on data gathered from recent reports of many European institutions that focus on education in STEM; especially, science as well as certain specific key competencies. The final part of the Desk Research presents the results of the CAWI Survey (Computer Assisted Web Interview) that has been issued among the Consortium Beneficiaries. The prepared questions form one of the key sources on which it was prepared and a valid point in the broad subject of STEM among the Consortium Beneficiaries.
  • Report on a requirement analysis: The purpose of this report is to provide useful suggestions for the construction of EDU-ARCTIC tools and the content of the EDU-ARCTIC educational programme. Materials used to compile this report contain results of the CAWI survey carried out in 42 schools in 4 countries: Poland, France, Norway and Faroe Islands.
  • Recommendations for the EDU-ARCTIC programme.
  • Polarpedia Documentation (expected in 2019).
  • Monitoring system documentation with manuals (expected in JAN 2017).
  • Evaluation Plan, including KPIs.

EDU-ARCTIC uses interactive, innovative online tools that allow everyone to use Arctic research as a teaching tool in secondary school education in Europe. Students between the ages of 13 and 20 and their teachers can take advantage of the educational programme's five main components:

  • Online webinar lessons hosted by polar scientists and broadcasted from research stations: The lessons focus on natural science topics, polar research and why they are key to helping solve important challenges in society. The content of each webinar may be adapted according to different school curricula and according to region or country.
  • “Polarpedia“: An evolving online encyclopedia that contains a glossary of scientific terms and educational resources in at least five national European languages.
  • Competitions for European students and their teachers: A winning group of students is invited to take part first-hand in polar research in the Arctic.
  • “Citizen science” environmental monitoring programme: All participating schools in Europe are invited to take part in a programme to conduct environmental monitoring around their school. The programme has a web-based portal allowing interested schools to register and submit their data to an open and accessible database. The database can be used as a supplement to science classes, most notably in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
  • Teacher workshops and training sessions: The aim is at giving teachers the right tools to use EDU-ARCTIC resources and become ambassadors of the project in their home countries.
