Thirteen schools in Latvia take part in The National Network for Schools with Innovative Experience (The Network) in order to improve the teaching-learning process in science and maths classes in Primary School (7-11 year old students).

Under the experts’ guidance teacher teams meet once a month in one of the Network’s schools to share experience. They observe and analyse each other’s science and maths lessons, and cooperate to develop content and methodology for competence-based learning.

In 2011, the National Centre for Education in cooperation with the Centre for Science and Mathematics Education (DZM) of the University of Latvia established the National Network for Schools with Innovative Experience (The Network). The Network is complementary to professional development training courses, created to improve teaching-learning process at schools. It is made up of 24 schools in Latvia. Under the DZM experts’ guidance, teams of the schools (teachers and school administrators) meet on a regular basis to share their innovative experience and to raise students’ achievements and interest in science and maths. After the meetings the team of teachers’ who participate in the Network spread their practice and knowledge to other teachers in their own school and also to teachers from the regional schools.

In 13 of the Network’s schools there are teachers’ teams who work to improve the teaching-learning process in science and maths classes in Primary School (ages 7-11). Under the DZM experts’ guidance, teacher teams meet once a month in one of the Network’s schools to share experience. They observe and analyse each other’s science and maths lessons, and cooperate to develop content and methodology for competence-based learning. Between the meetings the teacher team work together in their own school – they develop and pilot new lesson plans, observe each other’s lessons and improve them.
