CO2nnect: CO2 on the way to school

$image_alt.data

CO2nnect is an international school campaign for education for sustainable development on the theme of climate and transport.

The aim of CO2nnect is to support learning activities that provide pupils with abilities, skills, and awareness of issues related to sustainable development.

CO2nnect was developed as part of the “SUPPORT: partnership and participation for a sustainable tomorrow” project, which aimed to improve knowledge about and practice of education for sustainable development (ESD) and to integrate the principles, values and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning.

The aim of CO2nnect is that schools, researchers, local decision-makers and other actors in the local community collaborate on the theme of how to reduce CO2 emissions from local transport. The main tool is the CO2nnect website, which help teachers to organize teaching activities and school projects on the topic. The website contains e.g. a CO2-from-transport calculator, a shared database for the results, and tools to compare results in order to analyse and discuss the outcomes.

CO2nnect is not intended to be a “ready teaching package;” but a tool to inspire and help teachers with the work of constructing educational arenas and activities for and with their pupils and other actors in society.

CO2nnect was conceived and designed to be an innovative instrument to promote and mainstream education for sustainable development (ESD) in education systems, in the following ways:

  • as an example and prototype of new kinds of learning and learning arenas capable of producing the diverse learning outcomes of ESD (theory)
  • as a way to quickly introduce concrete ESD activities and pedagogical approaches in large numbers of schools internationally (practice)
  • as a tool supporting long-term school development and informing development of favourable framework conditions for ESD in education systems (policy).

The main outcomes are published in the following reports:

  • A CO2nnect evaluation report focusing on the pupils’ learning and school development
  • A CO2nnect Campaign Data Analysis looking at the scientific data submitted to the website
  • Guidelines on the use of ICT in ESD based on experience with CO2nnect

Pupils need wide competencies to meet the challenges of sustainable development – including climate change. The CO2nnect activities are designed to support learning that can provide pupils with abilities, skills, attitudes and awareness as well as knowledge and understanding of the issues.
The activities can easily be adapted to a range of age groups and linked to the curricula of many subjects. The main CO2nnect source is the www.co2nnect.org website, which provides teachers and schools with tools to:

  • Investigate CO2 emissions from travel to school
  • Share the findings using an international database
  • Compare and discuss CO2 emissions
  • Submit questions to a climate and transport expert
  • Partner with other schools
  • Meet people in the community to discuss emissions from transport
  • Generate and share ideas on how to reduce CO2 emissions
