Couldn't be without it

The main aim of the project was to explain to young people how technology could not exist without science, to connect fundamental research and daily life and to point to the opportunities in science.

The project illustrated that the technologies on which we depend evolve from fundamental research and that without it we would not live in the way we do now. It conducted an online survey to establish the top ten technologies that most affect people's everyday life: Young people were invited to visit the project website and vote for their favourite technological innovation. The results of the survey were presented as a series of quiz shows live on the Internet during the Science Week, from 4 to 10 November 2002.

The site also featured teaching kits to explain to students how their favourite gadgets actually work, and how a career in science can contribute to inventions that future generations couldn't be without.

The project also produced a full-scale television show, where teams of students from different schools competed against each other to win science-related prizes (e.g. trip to the Very Large Telescope in Chile, or visits to various laboratories of the project partners).

Three separate quiz shows, entitled ‘Your top tech', were organised at the end of the project, one each in French, English and Italian. They were webcast and the Italian show was also broadcast on one of the (RAI) state television channels.
