This teaching resource encourages students to consider the effects of pesticide use in agriculture and whether there are any other methods that can be used to control pests. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that between 20 and 40 percent of global crop production is lost to pests and diseases every year. To feed our growing population, these pests and diseases need to be managed abd controlled, but can we do that in a sustainable pesticide-free way? Dr Xiangming Xu and Dr Michelle Fountain, from the National Institute of Agricultural Botany, answer this question and more, giving students the taste of what a career in plant biology or entomology is like. The resource also includes an activity sheet and discussion points –questions your students can answer in groups or individually.
