The topic of navigation and the Vikings is introduced by questions and a short story. With the construction of an Indian Circle, the students reproduce the technique the Vikings probably used to determine the cardinal directions from the Sun’s apparent path during the day to stay on course to Iceland and Greenland on the open sea. In addition, this will demonstrate that the common time is only loosely connected to the rotation of the Earth and the apparent path of the Sun in the sky.
