June 2022: Summer learning loss

We all need a break every once in a while. Especially in the summer, when outdoor fun beckons. When it comes to STEM education, however, summer has a dark side: student learning loss caused by not engaging with these complex subjects for nearly three months in some countries. Summer learning loss, also known as the “summer slide”, has been observed in many different societies. It’s most pronounced for STEM subjects, although younger children from specific backgrounds also have been found to lose a lot of their reading skills over the summer. In this issue, we will explain the phenomenon, offer some solutions, and hear from one academic who thinks the root of the problem might be deeper than just having several weeks off.
