Promoting inquiry-based science teaching in ICT and STEM subjects

We are happy to announce that Teaching ICT with Inquiry project is looking for teachers who are eager to share their experience and best practices of implementing inquiry-based science teaching in ICT and STEM subjects in the classroom. For this purpose, the project is organising a competition withinin the framework of the 2020 STEM Discovery Campaign. In this competition, teachers are asked to create a TIWI implementation story – a transversal report describing the processes and impact of introducing ICT with inquiry method by using collaborative spaces as personal learning environments for students to work on research projects and particular tasks, and Go-Lab as a teaching methodology.

Applications are open for the Global Sky Partners programme

Las Cumbres Observatory is accepting applications for new educational partners to join the Global Sky Partners programme with projects to run between 1 June 2020 and 31 May 2021. The Global Sky Partners programme was launched in 2017 with the goal of inspiring students around the world to engage in astronomy and science endeavours by providing 1,000 hours of observing time on our telescope network to educational organisations.

The 2020 STEM Discovery Campaign: Bring your classroom into the virtual environment

As many countries have decided to close educational institutions due to the recent situation with the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak and some of them are looking more into online teaching, the team behind the 2020 STEM Discovery Campaign would like to support all educators in finding out new, engaging ways of involving students in online activities. In order to contribute to the collective efforts aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19, Scientix and all partners of the 2020 STEM Discovery Campaign encourage everyone to consider organising online STEM events such as webinars, chats, discussion boards, quizzes, etc.

For the 2020 STEM Discovery Campaign, “Atelier for STE(A)M” Erasmus+ project invites teachers to design a learning scenario or a lesson plan focusing on the topic “The colours of Science”. The winner and five finalists will each receive a Parrot Mambo drone.

If you’re planning any STEM activities from 1 February to 30 April, don’t miss the opportunity to showcase these on our blog. You can either organise any STEM activity, or use resources from the Scientix Repository of resources and report on your activity in a blog post. Authors of the best entries will be invited to join one of our workshops in the Future Classroom Lab in Brussels.

New pilot study on nature-based solutions and educational innovation

The pilot study on educational innovation around nature-based solutions, Phase 1, commissioned by DG Research and Innovation, has recently started and will be conducted by PPMI throughout 2020. In collaboration with European Schoolnet and relying on a group of proactive and engaged teachers from several European countries, 15 learning scenarios on nature-based solutions will be designed and made available in 12 EU languages. The objective is to provide teachers from primary and secondary education (both STEM and non-STEM) with a set of interesting and useful descriptions of educational activities that they could carry out in their classrooms, to raise awareness of nature-based solutions and their potential to change our environment and societies for the better.

Six new learning scenarios from the 3Rs project ready to implement in your class!

The 3Rs project, funded by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre under a European Parliament initiative, focused on building learning activities for secondary schools to introduce the principles of the 3Rs – Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animal use for scientific purposes. The goal was to inspire students to think critically about science, become aware of the scientific progress made for a future science without animal use, and build the skills to debate nuanced and complex topics such as animal testing.

Interview someone who is involved in science, coding or making and submit your questions and answers by 31 March 2020. Five winning interviews will be turned into illustrated stories by a professional graphic artist and added to the COMnPLAYer app along with credit to their creators.

Tackle environmental issues with the Clean Tech Competition

The Clean Tech Competition is a unique worldwide research and design challenge for pre-college youth which is part of the 2020 STEM Discovery Campaign. Each year, the Clean Tech Competition addresses an issue that is grounded in core technological competency areas and focuses on the next great engineering challenges. For the 2020 competition, the focus is on environmental awareness and participants take up the challenge “Reducing Individual Impacts”.
