Mobile technologies and the Internet of things in education

Educators and administrators can now express their interest in attending new five-day courses on the use of mobile technologies and the Internet of things in education. The courses are planned for November 2018, March 2019 and July 2019 in Patras, Greece.

Classroom experiments that can enrich your lessons

A banana, like all parts of living organisms, contains deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) that is easy to extract. This, and many other things, can be turned into an exciting classroom experiment, as the 23 teachers discovered who attended a Scientix course, from 25 to 29 June 2018, at the Future Classroom Lab of European Schoolnet, dedicated to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in primary education.

Gender and innovation in STE(A)M education

Scientix has published a new observatory paper on gender and innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics – STE(A)M – education. This paper is the outcome of the 12th Scientix Projects Networking Event, which was organised by Scientix in collaboration with the PERFORM and GEDII projects, funded by the Horizon 2020 framework of the European Union for research and innovation.

Meet these winners of the STEM Discovery Week competitions

Scientix, together with the STEM Alliance initiative, warmly welcomed 41 winners of their STEM Discovery Week competitions at the 23rd Science Projects Workshop at the Future Classroom Lab of European Schoolnet, in Brussels, Belgium, from 22 to 24 June 2018. All those winners presented their amazing activities in science education and their plans for next year’s STEM Discovery Week.

Half of schools coding by 2020

European Commissioners Mariya Gabriel and Tibor Navracsics strongly encourage all primary and secondary schools to join the annual European Code Week campaign, which will be celebrated 6 to 21 October this year. Half of all schools in Europe should be actively involved in the campaign by 2020, according to a letter that the two European Commissioners sent to all Ministers of Education of the European Union in May 2018.

Two new reports in science education to add to your summer reading

The new European STEM Schools Report includes key elements and criteria that are a very important contribution to schools’ strategies for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). A second report, Triseum’s Game-Based Learning Validation Study, gives educators an insight into the possible benefits of game-based learning for learners’ motivation and learning outcomes.

Contribute to this Scientix survey about STEM practices

Scientix invites teachers in secondary education, who teach at least one class of students from the ages of ten to over nineteen, to contribute to a new multilingual survey about teaching practices in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. The results of this survey will be published as part of the Scientix Observatory before the end of 2018.

Winners of the STEM Discovery Week 2018

Eight projects and practices get the International StarT Award 2018

Three projects run by young people and three educational practices run by educators in the fields of science, mathematics and technology are the winners of the International StarT Award 2018, selected by a jury of experts, in addition to two other initiatives awarded as a result of a public vote. This is the second year that the StarT community has awarded best practices in education.

Ten new training programmes on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) were presented in April at the second conference of Higher Education Institutions and Responsible Research and Innovation (HEIRRI). Education towards a responsible society was a cross-cutting theme addressed by this conference.
