Webinar outline:
During this webinar, Chris King demonstrates some activities of the team behind “Earth Learning Idea” and other topics in the field of geosciences. He also presents the details of an international textbook in the field of geosciences that will soon be published and available for download, free of charge. More specifically, this webinar is targeted at:
- teachers of geosciences, who have good qualifications in geosciences and teach geosciences as a stand-alone subject or through science or geography;
- teachers of science and geography in primary schools, but who have poor geoscience backgrounds and have received no training in the teaching of geosciences;
- teachers of geosciences in higher education;
- informal educators in geosciences;
- educational researchers in geosciences.

About the presenter:
Chris King has taught in schools for nineteen years and spent another nineteen years training science and geology teachers, as well as running the Earth Science Education Unit (ESEU), which has trained 40,000 science and geography teachers at primary schools across the United Kingdom. Chris has recently retired from paid work, but continues to run the ESEU and the website of Earth Learning Idea, which publishes a new teaching idea each week. Earth Learning Idea has published more than 300 activities that are downloaded worldwide at a rate of more than 45,000 downloads per week with nearly 4 million downloads so far and more than 900 translations into 10 different languages.
Mr King has recently become Chair of the European Geosciences Union Committee on Education (EGU CoE) and has been asked to prepare a strategy document to support teachers of geosciences across Europe and beyond. This strategy has been accepted and received funding for 2019. Among popular activities of the EGU CoE are the GIFT workshops, held in Vienna every year as part of EGU’s General Assembly. More than fifty teachers from Europe and around the world are invited to the workshops, with supporting teaching activities.
