The 2023 STEM Discovery Campaign kicks off with activities, events and competitions to shape STEM Identities!

The STEM Discovery Campaign is the annual initiative that promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), coordinated by Scientix in collaboration with many organisations and projects, and is celebrated in Europe and beyond from the beginning of February to the end of April. This year’s theme is ‘STEM Identities’, a concept that plays an important role in students’ academic success, career goals and orientation. Developing a STEM identity increases the likelihood that learners will develop science literacy – some might even pursue a STEM career.

The Three Rs project brings new resources for secondary teachers

The Three Rs Project – Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animal use in science – has developed new materials for secondary school teachers, which consist of new learning scenarios and additional resources, based on the three main principles of the Three Rs, specifically Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animal use in scientific research and which usually take an interdisciplinary approach.

The 7 Best-in-Class start-ups to watch in 2023

IMPACT EdTech was a €5.5M programme co-funded by the European Commission to boost innovation in education throughout Europe; it ended in October 2022. Its goal was to support European start-ups to move from promising prototypes towards viable products, ready to go to the market. After three years, the programme led by European Schoolnet, ISDI and FundingBox, has supported 43 start-ups in education and digital learning through a hybrid incubator-accelerator. These start-ups received support from the programme to develop, test and validate their solutions in real educational settings, in collaboration with education experts and teachers.

Learning by playing: AllThings.Bio turns people into BioHeroes

The term bioeconomy may sound detached and unfamiliar to most; a term for professionals rather than for citizens. However, the bioeconomy is increasingly a part of everyday life. The EU-funded project AllThings.bioPRO has detected this gap and designed a gamification ecosystem to bring people closer to this sector and help them learn in a fun and interactive way. Starting from the input collected through the numerous co-creation workshops with children and citizens of all ages, the project has developed a serious game and a smartphone app which should help people become familiar with the bioeconomy.

Teachers are trying to shape students into informed and active citizens who will work and build with nature instead of separately from it. However, the educational potential of nature-based solutions (NBS) remains largely unexplored, and innovative programmes and resources around NBS are currently missing from formal and informal education programmes for children and families.

The Three Rs materials are now available in 8 languages

The Three Rs Project – Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animal use in science – has recently translated a series of engaging teaching materials into eight different European languages to make it more accessible for secondary school teachers and students. You can find these materials in Czech, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Polish, Romanian and Spanish.

The 4th Scientix Conference brings together 1,200 participants

The 4th Scientix Conference took place on 18-19 November 2022, online. Some 1,200 teachers, researchers, policymakers, STEM professionals, industry representatives and STEM project managers came together for two days full of learning, networking and sharing.

The STE(A)M IT project has published a handbook for career advisers. Integrated STEM teaching aims to introduce students to STEM topics (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in a connected manner and contextualise STEM in the real world by highlighting examples of STEM jobs and careers to inspire students.
