The F1 in Schools STEM Challenge is a worldwide, multi-disciplinary competition involving more than 20,000 students from 40 countries. The participating students form teams of three to six members and their task is to design, construct and race a small-scale Formula One Car.

Each team is required to prepare a design portfolio as well as a pit display. Through their participation, students acquire scientific inquiry skills and domain-based knowledge by discovering relations between dependent and independent variables. The programme contains public speaking, project planning, development and management, resource procurement, industry links, graphic design and manufacturing engineering.

The challenge culminates in racing the cars on the 20-meter-long F1 in Schools Technology Challenge racetrack to see who has designed and manufactured the fastest car. For those who wish to take the challenge further, there are opportunities for regional, national and international competitions.

By bringing together industry, teachers and students in a collaborative and innovative environment to work on real-world projects, the project facilitates the formation of sustainable partnerships with schools in a way which increases the interaction between industry role models, knowledge about career opportunities and the students.

The 1st Vrilissia Junior High School from Athens, Greece, participates in the contest for the second time. Last year they were ranked in 10th place in the national finals.
